The Challenge
Local authority planning condition required TM52 assessment to ensure thermal comfort in new classrooms. South-facing orientation and large windows for daylighting created overheating risk. School needed natural ventilation solution to minimize running costs and provide healthy learning environment.
Our Solution
Detailed TM52 analysis of all teaching spaces using IESVE dynamic simulation. Modeled high occupancy densities typical of primary schools and internal heat gains from equipment. Designed enhanced natural ventilation strategy with night purge cooling and solar control glazing for south facade.
Results
All classrooms achieved TM52 compliance with natural ventilation strategy, meeting planning requirements. Our design recommendations reduced peak summer temperatures by 3-4°C. Planning approved without further thermal comfort conditions. School benefits from comfortable, naturally ventilated learning spaces.
